Difference between Amazon distributors and wholesale suppliers

Distributors vs Suppliers

Amazon Distributors vs Wholesale Suppliers

Distributors vs suppliers can get confusing when the same company is described three different ways on three different pages. Distributor. Wholesaler. Supplier. Sometimes all three on the same website.

The words do mean different things. Here’s the difference, and — more usefully — when it actually matters to you.

The Supply Chain, Briefly

Manufacturer → Distributor → Wholesaler → Retailer (you)

In practice that chain gets skipped and compressed constantly. Plenty of companies are two of those roles at once. But the positions are real, and each one has different implications for your cost and your MOQ.

Why “Authorized” Is the Word That Actually Matters

Forget the job titles for a second. The question that affects you is whether the company is authorized to sell the brand they’re offering.

This matters because Amazon brand owners file IP complaints. If your supplier isn’t authorized and the brand notices your offer, your listing can get pulled and your account can take a hit — regardless of what the supplier called themselves on their website.

Ask directly: “Are you an authorized distributor for this brand, and can you provide documentation?” The answer, and how quickly it comes, tells you most of what you need to know.

When the Distinction Doesn’t Matter

If a company has the stock, the authorization, a workable MOQ, and provides proper invoices — the label on their homepage is irrelevant. Don’t disqualify a good supplier because they called themselves the “wrong” thing.
